Fire Company response to False statements by Mayor and Council member
Contrary to what the Mayor of Newfield and Councilwoman Purdy have said the Newfield Fire Company No. 1 is no longer fighting fires for the Borough of Newfield . No members have quit or intend on quitting the Newfield Fire Company No. 1. The entire fire company by unanimous vote are not going to respond to any calls for service because we have had no option but to reject the ordinance that the court has upheld as the contract. We have no legal authority to fight fires by rejecting contract ordinance and the Borough has stated through their lawyer that our services are no longer needed.Below is the latest up to date letters between the fire company and the Borough. The Newfield Fire Company wants nothing more than to provide the excellent fire protection you have enjoyed for 107 years and are willing to do so but not without our Chief that by law is our choice and the contract ordinance that we have rejected being eliminated. We have stated previously we are willing to negotiate a contract but the borough is not willing to and has refused. We have operated for 107 years without any need for a contract and the fastest way to have our services back is for Borough to vacate ordinate/contract # 2013-7. The only reason we find ourselves in this position is because Borough of Newfield actions against the fire company and its Chief have put us here. The Borough of Newfield Mayor and council by their actions bear sole responsibility for reduced or lack of proper fire protection .
The Newfield Fire Company has been removed by the Borough of Newfield Mayor and council as the fire fighting entity for Newfield. The members having been left no choice other than to reject a contract that was imposed on us by ordinance 2013-7 as not acceptable. Unlike the Newfield Ambulance that does not respond at all, for example last month they had 17 calls they did not respond to 6 calls and this is been a common problem for years, yet no ordinance, no reporting, no control at all and yet you are paying for a paid ambulance in your county taxes that would make sure they respond to all calls yet mayor and council do nothing while people may die waiting for an ambulance that is not coming. Those problems do not exist at the Fire Company as we respond and handle all calls we are dispatched to no complaints no problems. The Borough has not had and continues to not have an updated approved emergency response plan by their emergency management coordinator for the last 9 years ,that potentially jeopardizes FEMA money in the event of a disaster. Yet no ordinance, no removal, no disipline of Emergency management Coordinator .We offered to continue fighting fires as long as William Mason remains chief, the mayor and council said no. We maintain as the court has ruled and agreed that the election or appointment of the chief is the fire company’s prerogative yet they refuse to accept and maintain they removed him after the fire company three times re-elected him chief since Borough attempted to remove him on false charges without a fair and impartial hearing. The mayor and council have decided to once again jeopardize your life safety and property by removing us as the firefighting entity and in doing so placing each and every resident in harms way not to mention higher taxes and insurance cost you will likely pay for reduced fire protection. They have placed the Forest Grove Fire Company who, after being removed by three separate Newfield fire Chiefs from responding to calls in Newfield for failure to follow orders causing unsafe conditions has now tasked them to handle all calls in Newfield and add Malaga Fire Company only to any structure fires clearly extending the response time for any incident in Newfield. This is an unsafe condition and an unnecessary move and irresponsible. We remain ready willing and able to continue to fight fires for the residents of Newfield as we have for the last 107 years. Our conditions are simple William Mason is the fire chief and negotiate a contract that is acceptable to both the Borough and the Fire Company or continue as we have ,without a contract at all as has been the practice for the last 107 years there exists no scenario where William Mason is not the Chief. The residents can stop this insanity, come out to the council meeting this Thursday February 12, 2015 at 7:00 PM and tell mayor and council you want the Newfield Fire Company back now.
